Man airlifted from secluded cove in Redwood National Park

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. — A Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew airlifted a man trapped in a cove today at Redwood National and State Park south of Crescent City.

The man, 35-year-old Eric Meyer, was found stuck in a cove surrounded by 200-foot cliffs at 11:30 a.m., approximately a mile south of Enderts Beach, a secluded area known for its tide pools during low tide. His car, which had remained in the parking lot for several days, was noticed by a patrolling National Park Service ranger last night.

Following discovery of the car, the Park Service and Del Norte County Sheriffs teams launched their search. At 9:30 a.m. today, the Park Service asked Coast Guard Group Humboldt Bay to help find Meyer.

During the shoreline search, the ground search teams found Meyer but was unable to reach him due to the steep cliffs and the high water levels surrounding the cove. Meyer was hoisted onto the helicopter and was administered first aid. He was delivered to Crescent City Airport where medical crews were standing by.

As a reminder, the Coast Guard cautions visitors to Northern California's coastal areas to be careful around rough and dangerous terrain. Visitors are urged to check weather reports and surf reports ahead of time and also to let someone know of their travel itineraries to these areas.
