Coast Guard rescues 9 from Liberty Island brush fire

ALAMEDA, Calif. - Coast Guard crews evacuated four people from Liberty Island who were trapped by a brushfire, along with an additional five people and their pleasure craft, immobilized in the vicinity of the fire.

Montezuma Fire Department was fighting a large brushfire, which started this morning on Liberty Island, and encountered four people who were stranded with no escape route.  They also observed a pleasure craft with five personnel stuck adjacent to the fire.  Montezuma FD contacted the Coast Guard at 11:53 AM requesting assistance to evacuate all of the people.

A Coast Guard boat crew from Station Rio Vista aboard a 25-foot response boat responded and transported the four people to safety.  The response boat also towed the pleasure craft and its five passengers to safety.  As a precautionary measure, Coast Guard personnel checked the eleven homes on the island to ensure no one was left behind.  Additionally, a Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco conducted an aerial search of the island and found no other stranded individuals.  Medical services were not required for any of the rescued people.
