Coast Guard Rescues Injured Logger

McKinleyville, Calif. -- The U.S. Coast Guard safely hoisted an injured logger from the Redwood forest this afternoon.

Group Humboldt Bay received a call from "Green Diamond" stating that the gentleman had possibly fractured both of his legs. An HH65C helicopter was launched from Air Station Humboldt Bay at approximately 12:00 p.m. and arrived on- scene 22 minutes later. the victim was located 15 miles Northwest of Orick just East of highway 101 in a deep ravine. The helicopter, piloted by CDR Rick Christoffersen, LCDR Mark Fluitt, Flight Mechanic Jake Marks and Rescue Swimmer Chuck Brannan navigated the steep terrain and performed the hoist from an altitude of 150 feet.

The victim was medevac'd to the Air Station in McKinleyville where an awaiting ambulance transported him to St. Joseph's hospital.
