GOOD SAMARITAN RESCUES CREW OFF CAPSIZED FISHING VESSEL NEAR HUMBOLDT BAY

MIKINLEYVILLE, Calif. -- At 1:19 p.m., the Coast Guard received a report from a Good Samaritan fishing vessel on Thursday of a capsized fishing vessel approximately one nautical mile off Samoa, Calif.

Upon receiving the call, the Coast Guard issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and immediately launched an HH-65 helicopter from Air Station Humboldt Bay, and a 47-foot motor life boat, from Station Humboldt Bay. A second Good Samaritan received the UMIB and diverted course to the location of the capsized vessel where the two uninjured crewman were rescued.

Large waves causing crab pots to shift and are believed to be the cause of incident.

The U.S. Coast Guard would also like to remind all recreational and commercial boaters to remain aware of the hazardous weather conditions and low water temperatures prominent off the Northern California coast. Please be sure to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including Coast Guard approved life jackets and dry suits.
