Coast Guard responds to a sheen near Monterey, Calif. |

MONTEREY, Calif. - The Coast Guard, along with California Department of Fish and Game, Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR), is responding to a sheen near the Breakwater Cove Fuel Pier in Monterey Harbor, today. At approximately 7:40 a.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a report of sheen in the water from Coast Guard Station Monterey. A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from the Station is on scene assessing the situation. Coast Guard Sector San Francisco immediately launched an HH-65 "Dolphin" Helicopter from Air Station San Francisco, and dispatched a Pollution Investigations Team from Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco, to further investigate this report. The Coast Guard helicopter arrived on scene at 8:40 a.m., and determined that the boundaries of the sheen were approximately 500 yards by 500 yards within the break wall. The crew of the 47-foot Motor Lifeboat placed absorbent pads and boom in the vicinity of the Fuel Pier to begin cleanup and as a precautionary measure. The source of the sheen is being investigated by the Coast Guard Pollution Team and California OSPR personnel. Fuel Pier personnel verified that the pressure in all fuel lines was normal, and ruled out the fuel pier as a possible source of the sheen. A contracted cleanup crew has been activated, and under Coast Guard oversight, will continue to assess the situation and carryout cleanup efforts.
