Coast Guard Reservist named Outstanding Junior Officer of the Year

SAN FRANCISCO - A Monterey, Calif., native was presented the Coast Guard Reserve 2008 Outstanding Junior Officer award Monday at the Reserve Officer Association Mid-Winter Conference held in Washington.

Lt. David Cripe, of Coast Guard Sector San Francisco, was selected for the award which is presented to the junior officer judged to be the most outstanding based on exemplary performance of Coast Guard duties, civic accomplishments, demonstrated leadership ability, and notable contributions to the Coast Guard.

Cripe served as the Coast Guard's Pacific Area planning section chief during the 2008 Rim of the Pacific maritime Exercise (RIMPAC). RIMPAC is the largest maritime exercise in the world and brings together maritime, air and land forces from Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, Netherlands, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.  This year's exercise included 35 surface combatant ships, including a carrier task group, six submarines, more than 150 aircraft and 20,000 sailors, Marines, soldiers, airmen and Coast Guardsmen.

He demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities by his participation in three Officer Candidate School accession boards.

Cripe is a marine biologist in his civilian life. He also serves as a fire department rescue swimmer and is responsible for the training of a 20-member rescue team. He serves as a school board president and as a volunteer coach, where he teaches 70 low income young men and women from his community.

Cripe has received the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and was recently selected for the Department of Homeland Security's Secretary's Award for Volunteer Service.
