Boutwell Departs Chochin After Three Days of Cooperative Cross Training
COCHIN, India -- The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell departed here Feb. 20, 2009, after a productive three-day visit where the crew participated in formal receptions, a community project to help refurbish a relief home and a friendly game of basketball with members of the Indian coast guard. Boutwell also hosted a formal reception to share some of the highlights of U.S. culture with its Indian counterparts. The last day of the visit, members of the Indian coast guard and the crew of the Boutwell conducted joint search and rescue and anti-piracy enforcement exercises. "I was pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with our Indian partners, enhancing our ability to promote maritime safety and security for our two nations," said Capt. Kevin J. Cavanaugh, commanding officer of the 378-foot cutter. Assigned to the Coast Guard's Pacific Area Command, headquartered in Alameda, Calif., Boutwell is one of 12 high endurance cutters with missions that range from drug interdiction to fisheries enforcement. Boutwell's patrols range as far north as the Aleutian Island chain off the coast of Alaska and as far south as the coast of Columbia. The cutter and its crew represent the Coast Guard's commitment to support national defense operations around the globe and is currently attached to the USS Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group. During this patrol, Boutwell will circumnavigate the globe, visiting numerous countries in an effort to create strong professional ties, share maritime defense strategies and improve interoperability with cooperating foreign nations. ###
