Boutwell Arrives in Karachi as Guest of Pakistan Navy |

KARACHI, Pakistan – The crew aboard Coast Guard Cutter Boutwell arrived at the port of Karachi March 5, 2009, to join the multinational Naval Peace Exercise, AMAN ’09, scheduled to take place in the Arabian Sea March 5-14 at the request of the Pakistan Navy. As many as 38 countries were present during the event and AMAN ’09 had 11 participating countries that incorporated their ships, maritime aircraft and special forces for the scheduled events. Along with the U.S., other visiting countries participating in the exercise included Australia, Bangladesh, China, France, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nigeria, Turkey and the United Kingdom. Bahria University also held an international maritime conference to correlate with the AMAN ’09 exercise. The first AMAN exercise was held in March 2007, which had Bangladesh, China, France, Italy, Malaysia, the U.K. and the US navies participate with a total of 14 ships. AMAN is an Urdu word meaning peace. The AMAN ’09 slogan is “Together for Peace.” Assigned to the Coast Guard's Pacific Area Command, headquartered in Alameda, Calif., Boutwell is one of 12 high endurance cutters with missions that range from drug interdiction to fisheries enforcement. Boutwell's patrols range as far north as the Aleutian Island chain off the coast of Alaska and as far south as the coast of Columbia. The Boutwell and its crew represent the Coast Guard's commitment to support national defense operations around the globe and is currently attached to the USS Boxer Expeditionary Strike Group. During their current patrol, the crew of 378-foot cutter will circumnavigate the globe visiting numerous countries in an effort to create strong professional ties, share maritime defense strategies and improve interoperability with cooperating foreign nations. ###
