Coast Guard assists in the rescue of an injured hiker |

ALAMEDA, Calif. - A Coast Guard helicopter crew assisted the San Luis Obispo Fire Department in the rescue of an injured hiker, about 25 miles south of Big Sur, Calif., around 9:45 p.m., Saturday. The hiker's hand was struck and partially amputated by a fallen boulder. The fire department arrived on scene, but could not complete the rescue due to nightfall and the steep terrain. A helicopter with hoist and night-vision capabilities was requested. The Monterey Fire Dispatch contacted the Coast Guard, and a MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco was launched. The helicopter arrived on scene and conducted a 232-foot hoist to successfully medevac the hiker. The hiker was taken to Monterey Airport and transferred to emergency medical personnel. He is listed in stable condition. ###
