New Commander will lead Eleventh Coast Guard District following change of command ceremony on Coast Guard Island

 

WHO: Rear Adm. Joseph Castillo and Rear Adm. Paul F. Zukunft

WHAT: Rear Adm. Castillo will assume command of the Eleventh Coast Guard District from Rear Adm Paul F. Zukunft at a change of command ceremony. Rear Adm. Castillo is the first Hispanic-American to be named a district commander. Rear Adm. Zukunft will become the Assistant Commandant of Capability at Coast Guard Headquarters and will be in charge of identifying and providing capabilities, competencies, and capacity for the staffing, training, maintaining, and employing Coast Guard forces to meet mission requirements.

Additional Information: The Eleventh Coast Guard District encompasses the states of California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, the coastal and offshore waters out over thousand miles and the offshore waters of Mexico and Central America down to South America.  Coast Guard operational units are located throughout the state of California, with the District and Pacific Area headquarters located on Coast Guard Island in Alameda, California along the east side of San Francisco Bay.

In fiscal year 2008, Eleventh Coast Guard District units responded to 2,614 Search and Rescue cases, saving over 503 lives and 14 million dollars in property. We conducted 2,572 commercial vessel inspections, 2,243 port state control boardings, and issued 8,942 merchant mariner documents and licenses. Coast Guard and US Navy assets under the tactical control of the District prosecuted 36 major counter-drug cases in the eastern Pacific Ocean, interdicting more than 3.5 tons of marijuana and 47 tons of cocaine, representing 61% of the Coast Guard total for that year.
