Coast Guard rescues two people from capsized catamaran

ALAMEDA, Calif. - The U.S. Coast Guard and the Redwood City Fire Department rescued a man and woman this afternoon after their 14-foot catamaran capsized south of the San Mateo Bridge.

At approximately 3:11 p.m., Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a report from the man in water that his catamaran had capsized. He was able to call the Coast Guard over Channel 16 from a hand-held radio. The man reported that a woman passenger was also in need of assistance and was clinging to the hull of the overturned vessel. An HH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew, from Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco, was dispatched to the scene and arrived at approximately 3:45 p.m. The helicopter crew hoisted the man from the water, and the Redwood City Fire Department was able to rescue the woman clinging to the vessel.

No injuries were reported and both people were wearing dry suits.

Thankfully both members from the vessel were equipped with the proper safety gear, including dry suits, to protect them from the cold, and a hand-held radio, which attributed to the speedy rescue.
