Coast Guard to hold West Coast aids-to-navigation olympics

 

NOTE: ASSIGNMENT EDITORS- The aids-to-navigation "olympics" is a very visual event involving Coast Guard crew members competing to show off their skills in the grueling, heavy duty work associated with maintaining aids to navigation and maritime safety.

WHO: Coast Guard crew from the cutters: Aspen, homeported San Francisco; Fir, homeported Astoria, Ore.; Kukui, homeported Honolulu; George Cobb, homeported Long Beach, Calif.; Bluebell, homeported Portland, Ore; Henry Blake, homeported Everett, Wa.; and 9 ATON teams along the West Coast

WHAT: In conjunction with regional training and professional development, ship crews and ATON teams will compete to test their seamanship and buoy-deck operating skills, events including:  precision-crane operating obstacle course, survival-suit swim relay, chain-pulling race, tug-o-war, and a shackle "heat-and-beat"  race.

Media is invited to photograph/videotape events, interview participants and subject matter experts.

WHEN: August 13, 2009, 11:45 a.m.-4 p.m.

WHERE: Coast Guard Island, Alameda, Calif.
