Coast Guard conducts hoist near Richmond

ALAMEDA, Calif. - The Coast Guard hoisted a 60-year-old man from a 23-foot sailing vessel that ran aground near Richmond, Calif. around 5:40 p.m., today.

The man contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco on a cell phone when his boat hit bottom on Brooks Island.

A 25-foot rapid response boat from Station San Francisco was launched, however, due to the location of the vessel, the response boat could not get close enough to provide assistance. The man on board was alone, and had concerns about staying on the boat until high tide came in at 11 p.m. He requested to be evacuated, and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter, from Air Station San Francisco, was deployed to the scene. The helicopter crew completed the evacuation around 9 p.m. and brought the man back to the air station where he was medically evaluated by airport emergency medical services.
