Coast Guard, unified command continue sunken tug cleanup operations |

SAN FRANCISCO - The Coast Guard, California Department of Fish and Game's Office of Spill Prevention and Response, local agencies, and other partner organizations continue unified efforts in response to an oil spill that occurred Monday, Aug, 17 when the tugboat Wenonah sank at her berth at Pier One on Treasure Island. While on-water oil containment and recovery operations will continue, it is expected that salvage operations of the sunken tug will not commence until the week of Aug. 24. Cleanup efforts have removed 200 to 300 gallons of an oily water mixture with costs at approximately $100,000. The Coast Guard is enforcing a 200-yard safety zone around the sunken tug. Recreational boaters are urged to maintain a safe distance from the containment area while transiting in and around Clipper Cove. The Coast Guard Auxiliary, Department of Fish and Game, and local state agencies will be making routine patrols of the area. The public is an invaluable partner in the protection of the environment. They are encouraged to call the National Response Center at 1-800-424-8802 to report any possible pollution or environmental threats. The National Response Center is the primary federal point of contact for reporting oil and chemical spills and is based out of Washington, D.C..
