SAN FRANCISCO — The missing fisherman who was reported missing Thursday night has been found safe 11 nautical miles offshore of Moss Landing, Calif. shortly before 3 p.m. by a fellow fisherman. Search and Rescue Controllers from Coast Guard Sector San Francisco received a response from an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast from Ron Latham, a fellow fisherman that he had located the overdue 34-foot fishing vessel. The overdue fishing vessel was disabled but with the fisherman safely on board. A 41-foot utility boat from Coast Guard Station Monterey took over the tow and will take the vessel to Moss Landing. The Coast Guard commenced the search Thursday night after receiving a call at 11:50 p.m. from the overdue fisherman's girlfriend that reported he had not returned after a day long fishing trip. An HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station San Francisco along with a 47-motor lifeboat from Station Monterey commenced searching last night. An HC-130 Hercules Aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento and an HH-65 Dolphin Helicopter from Air Station Los Angles joined in the search today. The Coast Guard emphasizes the importance of filing a float plan and having the proper safety and communications equipment onboard your vessel. Cell phones are often unreliable in the open ocean and cannot be considered a suitible replacement for a VHF-radio. ###
