Local Coast Guard units honor 9/11victims

 

ALAMEDA, Calif. - U. S. Coast Guard personnel stationed on Coast Guard Island in Alameda dedicated today's morning colors ceremony and observed a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the  the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The ceremony concluded with remarks from Rear Adm. Timothy Sullivan, deputy commander of Pacific Area, and a prayer lead by Commander Darrell Wesley, Coast Guard chaplain.

The Coast Guard was instrumental in securing the nation's ports and waterways in the wake of the attacks in 2001, and over the past eight years has worked with federal, state, local and international partners to strengthen security measures.

An example of the Coast Guard's increased security capabilities are Maritime Safety and Security Teams and an increase in boardings and inspections of ships, ferry boats and port facilites. Based in key port cities and available for deployment wherever they are needed, MSST unit designation numbers all begin with the numbers 911.  MSST 91105 is based in San Francisco.  Imagery related to MSST91105 is provided below.
