The Coast Guard was instrumental in securing the nation's ports and waterways in the wake of the attacks in 2001, and over the past eight years has worked with federal, state, local and international partners to strengthen security measures.
An example of the Coast Guard's increased security capabilities are Maritime Safety and Security Teams and an increase in boardings and inspections of ships, ferry boats and port facilites. Based in key port cities and available for deployment wherever they are needed, MSST unit designation numbers all begin with the numbers 911. MSST 91105 is based in San Francisco.
