SAN FRANCISCO - The Coast Guard's Maritime Safety and Security Teams from San Francisco and Boston, along with a Regional Dive Locker West dive team from San Diego, conducted safety and security inspections on piers and aboard ferries today in preparation for Fleet Week 2009.

Equipped with a K-9 unit, MSST San Francisco searched for potential hazards that could compromise the safety and security of Fleet Week events. A dive team from Regional Dive Locker West also conducted underwater safety and security checks of piers along the San Francisco waterfront. Three teams from MSST Boston performed security checks of ferries transiting San Francisco Bay.

The safety of Fleet Week patrons and performers is the Coast Guard's and partner federal, state and local agencies' primary focus during this year's events. Historically during Fleet Week festivities, boating traffic has been very heavy along the San Francisco waterfront. The combination of boat wakes and mid-day winds can result in rough conditions on the bay. Boaters are urged to navigate with extreme caution and remain cognizant of enforced security zones during the Parade of Ships and aerial shows.
