Coast Guard stresses beach safety and highlights first storm of the season |

SAN FRANCISCO - The U.S. Coast Guard reminds the public to remain aware of high surf conditions and sudden changes in tidal influences throughout the storm season. The Coast Guard strongly recommends that people avoid going near the water at beaches or other low-lying coastal areas, especially climbing down cliffs, jetties and rocky areas, during rough surf due to rapidly changing weather systems. Large waves can quickly and unexpectedly sweep a person from these areas. Even the strongest swimmers can quickly be overtaken by the power of the sea, especially when the cold-water temperatures are factored in. Although tremendous efforts were made by the public to prepare for this week's storm, the Coast Guard received 10 reports of vessels that had run aground or had broken free from their moorings throughout the Bay Area and Delta. In all cases, no pollution concerns were reported or located. Crews from Sector San Francisco Incident Management Division and Marine Safety Detachment Humboldt Bay completed 22 marina visits and called an additional 25 marinas yesterday to check current weather conditions and discuss potential pollution hazards. Incident Management personnel are responsible for the response and management of any pollution threats, actual or potential, that may exist. For more information on current weather warnings or forecasted weather conditions, beach-goers and mariners should visit the National Weather Service website at, http://nws.noaa.gov. ###
