Coast Guard suspends search for missing Carmel beachgoer

SAN FRANCISCO - Crews from Sector San Francisco suspended the search late Saturday evening for a man that was reported to have been swept out to sea in Carmel-by-the-Sea, Calif.

Today at 1:28 p.m. the Coast Guard was notified of an adult male that had been swept out to sea while swimming with a friend.  The 34 year-old male was reported to be wearing blue jeans with no shirt.

A 47-foot Motor Lifeboat from Station Monterey, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco, and crews from Carmel Police Department commenced searching for the individual.  Crews experienced surf upwards of 13-feet throughout the search.

At 6:30 p.m. the search was suspended after units scoured Carmel Bay and completed shoreline searches from both land and sea.

The name of the individual involved in this case has not been released.

The Coast Guard recommends that everyone use extreme caution when participating in recreational or commercial activities on beaches and other low lying areas, especially during the winter storm season.  Strong waves can unexpectedly come ashore and wash even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
