SAMOA, Calif.- The Coast Guard recognized a Good Samaritan Friday for his assistance during a rescue case on Dec. 8, 2009. Dale Winogradov, a Eureka Calif. native, was given a letter of appreciation for his selfless actions after noticing a boat in distress off of Samoa beach. After Winogradov spotted the boat being overturned in the high surf, he promptly notified the Coast Guard by dialing 911. He then spotted a person in the nearby breaking waves and, without concern for his own wellbeing, dove into the frigid surf. He was able to pull the person to shore just as Coast Guard crews arrived by land and to assist with the rescue. Winogradov then remained at the scene and drove his vehicle along the beach looking for other victims as the Coast Guardsmen attempted to revive the man. Winogradov was recognized for his heroic efforts and for his quick notification of the Coast Guard. “We especially appreciated his willingness to stay on scene to help with important details," said Chief Petty Officer Kyle Betts, executive petty officer of Station Humboldt Bay. "Having the reporting source readily available vastly improves the quality of information.” The Coast Guard encourages all persons to report signs of distress on the water via Channel 16 marine band radio, or to simply call 911. The Coast Guard also requests that, if safe to do so, persons remain on scene to provide important details to responders as needed. |
