Multimedia Release: Saluting the family heroes - our military children

Base Alameda hosts fun-filled fest for military children

ALAMEDA, Calif. — In true military tradition of promoting family values, the Coast Guard Base Alameda celebrated the Month of the Military Child Friday by hosting family-friendly festivities in the Emlen Tunnell Gymnasium and surrounding area. Children were entertained with fun-filled activities such as face painting, bounce houses, games, live music and a petting zoo.

“Our families, our children, make the greatest sacrifices and are our true heroes; they serve too,” said Capt. Gary Spenik, Base Alameda Commanding Officer. “I’m glad this opportunity is set aside to honor them and their selfless contributions to our missions. We want our precious children to feel loved and appreciated for what they do best—being our family cheerleaders!”

April is the Month of the Military Child, which was originally established in 1986 by then Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. This month-long occasion recognizes the important role military children play in the lives of its members and the courage and sacrifices they must make growing up in a dynamic military household.

There are more than 1.2 million military children, with either one or both parents in service, who must endure the same aspects of military life as their parents. Despite frequent moves, parental deployments, and adjusting to make new friends, military children with strong ties to their community have learned to gain strength and thrive in spite of these challenges.

Base Alameda, as part of a larger Bay Area presence for the Coast Guard, hosts several shore and cutter-based commands including the newest cutters Bertholf, Waesche and Stratton and is the base operations for the 11th Coast Guard District and the Coast Guard Pacific Area command. More than 4,000 Coast Guard members and their families call the Bay Area home.

VIDEO RELEASE: Update 3- Medical supplies dropped off to yacht crew 300 miles off SF

Injured crew to be airlifted

ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf, an Alameda-based National Security Cutter, is steaming toward a damaged yacht located approximately 270 miles west of San Francisco to help three crewmembers injured as a result of heavy seas.

With the cutter’s long range rescue helicopter aboard, plans call for the aircrew to fly to the yacht, assess the crews' injuries, and airlift any sailors who require immediate medical attention.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard air station San Diego flew to the cutter yesterday to prepare for today's rescue operation after an initial attempt to assist the injured sailors was thwarted by weather.

Earlier, a California Air National Guard parajumper rescue team from the 129th Air Rescue Wing flew to the scene aboard a Coast Guard C-130 Hercules aircraft but they were unable to parachute down to the sailboat due to rough weather conditions. Medical supplies were successfully dropped to the boat at 6 p.m., Saturday.

The Bertholf is the first of the Coast Guard's new fleet of National Security Cutters. Key factors in the ongoing operation are the cutter's long range search and rescue capabilities, and flight deck capable of supporting the larger long-range helicopter.

The Clipper Round the World Race Yacht, Geraldton Western Australia (CV6), with 13 crew on board, is part of a ten-vessel around-the-world yacht race that started in Southampton, U.K. and will finish July 22 after nearly a year at sea.

Nine of the ten-strong fleet are currently docked in Jack London Square, with the Geraldton Western Australia yacht expected to arrive sometime tomorrow afternoon.

ALAMEDA, Calif. – The crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau returned to homeport at Coast Guard Island today after successfully derailing multiple illegal trafficking operations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean.

During a 72-day patrol the crew intercepted nine vessels engaged in narcotics, migrant, and money trafficking. The interceptions, some accomplished in coordination with navies of partner nations in the region, resulted in the seizure or disruption of more than a ton of cocaine and approximately 1,300 pounds of marijuana, confiscation of $12,000 in cash associated with criminal activity, the interdiction and rescue of 10 undocumented migrants, and detainment of 15 suspected smugglers.

An aviation detachment from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron based in Jacksonville, Fla., was aboard during the patrol and completed over 100 flight hours and was critical in directing the intercept of some of the smuggling vessels.

“This deployment is a true testament to the abilities and dedication of my crew and the aviators of the HITRON detachment,” said Capt. Gregory Burg, Morgenthau’s commanding officer. “As you walk around the decks you can’t help but notice crewmembers smiling as they share stories about the past months’ events. These successes are due to the incredible dedication of these young men and women who leave their families for months at a time to make a difference.”

Overall coordination of the counter-drug mission in the Eastern Pacific is done by the Joint Interagency Task Force, South, headquartered in key West, Fla. U.S. maritime law enforcement and the interdiction phase of operations in the region occurs under the tactical control of the 11th Coast Guard District, based in Alameda, Calif., or by law enforcement agencies of partner nations in the region. Morgenthau worked with both the Panamanian and Colombian navies to successfully intercept suspected smuggling vessels on this patrol.

"The accomplishments of Morgenthau's crew and the HITRON on this patrol were extraordinary," said Rear Adm. Joseph "Pepe" Castillo, 11th Coast Guard District commander. “The high level of performance sustained on this patrol shows the tenacity of these brave men and women and I appreciate the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe. The results of this patrol clearly show that flight-deck equipped cutters and helicopters working in tandem provide unmatched capability to patrol for prolonged periods, quickly interdict threats far from U.S. shores, respond to emergencies, and protect the security and safety of all Americans.”

Morgenthau, commissioned on March 10, 1969, has a crew of approximately 165 men and women whose missions include search and rescue, drug and migrant interdiction, fisheries and maritime law enforcement, marine environmental protection and homeland security.

The 43-year-old Morgenthau and the 11 other original Secretary class, high endurance cutters, are being replaced by eight Legend class, national security cutters. The national security cutters are faster, better equipped, more durable, safer and more efficient than their predecessors, and will allow the Coast Guard to deliver its unique blend of military capability, law enforcement authority and lifesaving expertise wherever needed to protect American interests, today and for decades to come. The first three of these new cutters share the homeport of Alameda with Morgenthau.

NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba — While on duty overseas during Christmas Day, San Francisco Bay area native Petty Officer 2nd Class Derek W. Weatherly's call from President Obama was a pleasant surprise.

In the Coast Guard's blog Compass, the two conversed on Weatherly's deployments and football. Weatherly is a huge Oakland Raiders fan.

"We talked a lot of football,” Weatherly said. “The Raiders’ overtime win and other NFL games from Saturday.”

Weatherly is one of 10 servicemembers the President called on Christmas Day as part of tradition to thank them for their service.

Weatherly works as a machinery technician with duties as a tactical boat crewmember in the waterside section and provides on-water, anti-terrorism force protection for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay.
