Summary: The Coast Guard Cutter Stratton, named for Dorothy C. Stratton, is the third of eight planned Legend Class cutters following the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf and Waesche.
The 418-foot cutter has a top speed of 28 knots, a range of 12,000 miles and a crew of 110. It's equipped with a 4,000 square-foot flight deck that is outfitted with an automated landing and dual track hangaring system.
Stratton is also equipped with two Short Range Prosecutor small boats that can be deployed and recovered from the stern launch system, increasing the ability to launch and recover boats in heavy seas.
The cutter's sponsor is Michelle Obama, the first First Lady to sponsor a Coast Guard cutter. On July 23, 2010 Michelle Obama christened the cutter in a ceremony at the ship builder's. The ship will be commissioned at a ceremony on Coast Guard Island in March.

]]>Summary: In the South Pacific aboard their yacht Ocealys, Maurice and Sophie Conti courageously saved the lives of three boaters in the early hours of October 13, 2008. The Conti’s, now residents of Muir Beach, Calif., will be presented Certificates of Valor by the Coast Guard Pacific Area Commander.
The certificate of valor is awarded to those who exhibit courage in saving a life or attempting to save a life at extreme risk.

]]>WHAT: Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento will be holding a remembrance ceremony where a bronze C-130 will be dedicated to honor nine aviators lost during a tragic mid-air collision off the coast of San Diego two years ago. The crews being memorialized were from Sacramento-based Coast Guard Rescue aircraft 1705 and San Diego-based Marine Corps helicopter Vengeance 38.
WHO: The United States Coast Guard District Eleven Commander, Rear Admiral Joseph Castillo, will serve as the presiding official for the ceremony. Guests include Coast Guardsmen from throughout the country, service members from other military branches, community leaders as well as the family of the fallen members.

BACKGROUND: On the night of Oct. 29, 2009, a CG HC-130H Rescue Aircraft 1705 from Sacramento was searching for a mariner in distress near San Clemente Island off the San Diego coast when it collided with a USMC AH-1W Cobra helicopter flying a training mission. Seven Coast Guardsmen and two Marines lost their lives. They were: Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Che Barnes, Lt. Adam Bryant, Chief Petty Officer John Seidman, Petty Officer Carl Grigonis, Petty Officer Monica Beacham, Petty Officer Jason Moletzsky, and Petty Officer Danny Kreder, Marine Corps Maj. Samuel Leigh and First Lt. Thomas Claiborne.

WHO: The San Francisco-based Coast Guard Cutter Aspen will be hosting 10 young cancer patients and their families from the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Palo Alto. The boys, ages 8 to 18, will be enjoying this year’s Fleet Week air show.
WHAT: The media is invited to cover this event which was made possible by CHEERS, a program that gives cancer patients and their families peer support through outdoor group activities. In addition, 19 for Life, a charitable foundation created to honor the life of DJ Frandsen—brother of former San Francisco Giants player Kevin Frandsen—paid for the limousine that will transport the boys from the hospital to Yerba Buena Island.

Public education event— Coast Guard and joint partner agencies to provide boat rides, recommend safety gear, go over “dos and don’ts” for boaters as they take to the water to enjoy visiting vessels during Fleet Week weekend. Boating and safety are primary concerns for the Coast Guard- reminding boaters to keep safe while having fun.
Wednesday, Oct. 5: CENTER MARKER BUOY DROP. The Los Angeles-based Cutter George Cobb will be setting the center marker buoy for the Blue Angels (guiding their aerial “turns”) in San Francisco Bay. Four other marker buoys will also be “dropped” at strategic zones as navigational guides to mark the 500-yard safety boundaries for passing vessels.
Thursday, Oct. 6,: INTERAGENCY SOFTBALL COMPETITION. Coast Guard teams will have a friendly battle against Navy, Marines and Oakland Police and Fire Departments on Coast Guard Island in Alameda. Scheduled for 9 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 8: PARADE OF SHIPS. Limited seating offered aboard a Coast Guard Auxiliary or Coast Guard vessel to views of Coast Guard and other visiting vessels underway during the parade of ships in San Francisco Bay. Views include those cheering the parade from pierside viewing stands.
